IBM Partners with Canadian Institute, IVADO, To Explore AI - Nearshore Americas
IBM has teamed up with a Montreal-based Institute for Data Valorization (IVADO) to jointly develop artificial intelligence (AI) products, with plans to add another 100 technology professionals to its innovation center. The innovation center, launched in 2016 for providing digital transformation services, will henceforth focus on AI and Salesforce expertise, the American technology giant stated in a press release. "Research in AI is quickly expanding worldwide โ and particularly in Montrรฉal โ but AI is far from having reached its full potential in delivering concrete results for businesses," said Claude Guay, General Manager, IBM Services, Canada. "IBM's CIC in Montrรฉal will focus on delivering value to its clients through applied AI and bringing real solutions to real problems." The new recruits the company is looking for will work as machine learning engineers, data scientists, full stack developers, or data engineers.
UAE signs deal to explore AI in air traffic management
The UAE's aviation authority has signed an agreement which will explore the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the country's air traffic management. The UAE General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) and Searidge Technologies have signed the deal to cooperate in pursuing research and development activities. The collaboration is the first in the region and will bring together the technical expertise of Canada-based Searidge Technologies in digital airport solutions and the operational expertise of GCAA, a statement said. Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi, director general of the GCAA, confirmed that it is the UAE's strategy to explore new technologies and applications in the aviation industry. "We look forward to working with Searidge and believe this collaboration will help advance the use of technology in aviation to optimize safety and efficiency in the UAE and around the globe. The MoU agreement will promote, develop and reinforce administrative, technical and scientific cooperation," added Ahmed Al Jallaf, assistant director general Air Navigation Services, GCAA.

About half of enterprises are using some form of artificial intelligence (AI), mostly in their off-the-shelf IT automation software--but that doesn't mean they are doing it right, analysts from IDC said. Artificial intelligence, which some companies may call cognitive software or machine learning, goes back to research on chess-playing computers of the 1950s; now it's best known for powering virtual assistants through your smart device. AI really earns its keep by helping IT staff keep their information infrastructure running. IDC analysts Peter Rutten and Ritu Jyoti talked with TechRepublic about how to do AI right. Ford forms robotics research team to explore AI beyond cars
Ford CTO Ken Washington today announced that the automaker will create a robotics and AI research team to explore AI beyond autonomous cars. "This is the next step in Ford's automation story," Washington said. "Ford is poised to drive into the future by expanding automation of mobility products and services." The team to focus on AI and robotic research and development is being created, Washington said, because Argo.ai now leads development of Ford's first generation of self-driving vehicles. Last summer, Ford announced plans to double its Silicon Valley footprint and said it plans to mass produce self-driving cars without steering wheels by 2021.
